The above will and the inventory of the estate. of Rev. P Bulkeley's grandfather are of great interest as indicating the social status of the family and the social conditions of the period, It will be noted that the lands were not appraised for inclusion in the inventory. The Landed estates were entailed for the benefit of Mr. Bulkley‘s eldest grandson, William, whom he calls "nephew." This term was used in that sense, in strict conformity with its derivation from the Latin "nepos" The term "cousin" in the will refers to nephews of Mr. Bulkeley or of his wife, or to the husbands of his nieces. The will does not add very greatly to our genealogical knowledge, and its chief importance is that it verifies many of the statements made in the pages of the present volume. It is interesting to note that Thomas named his son Edward and daughter-in-law Olive, who were the parents of the Rev Peter Bulkeley; also, that he mentioned the names of his own wife Elizabeth, and those of his parents and of his maternal grandfather. The cousin Robert Grosvenor whom he mentioned was doubtless a nephew of his wife, Elizabeth Grosvenor. The cousin Thomas Duffield was husband of his niece, Jane Miles.

The sister who was called Hellen Mills in his will was identical with the Elianor Myles of London, widow, whose will dated 5 Nov. 1594, proved 13 Nov. 1594, directed that she should be buried in the church of St. John's WaIbroke near the corpse of her late husband William Myles, pewterer. Mrs. Miles gave twenty schillings for a ring to her cousin [nephew] Mr. Edward Bulkley, D.D., and the same to her cousin [nephew] Rowland Myles and named her cousin Mr. Doctor Bullkley ‘as an overseer of her estate, the Chief legatees being her four children, Rowland Myles, William Myles, Alice wife of John Leverton, and Jane wife of Thomas Duffield.

Elizabeth GROSVENOR [Parents] [scrapbook] 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 was born 8, 9 in 1515 in Bellaport, Shropshire, England, United Kingdom. She died about 1591 in Woore, Shropshire, England, United Kingdom. Elizabeth married 10, 11 Thomas BULKELEY 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17 in 1533 in Woore, Shropshire, England, United Kingdom.

Elizabeth Grosvenor, married Thomas Bulkeley of Woore, Shropshire; grandparents of Rev. Peter Bulkeley and of Peter's several sisters, who left numerous descendants in the United States. The will of Randall Grosvenor (23 Feb. 1558/9, inventory dated 3 Mar. 1559/ 60), naming both his daughter Elizabeth Bulkeley and his son-in-law Thomas Bulkeley, is printed verbatim in The Bulkeley Genealogy, pp. 10-11; and the long will of Thomas Bulkeley, which names his son Edward Bulkeley and his daughter-in-law Olive Bulkeley, is printed verbatim therein, pp. 888-890. The Rev. Edward and Olive (Irby) Bulkeley were the parents of the Rev. Peter Bulkeley.

They had the following children.

He died 8, 9 on 5 Jan 1620/1621 in Odell, Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom. Edward married Olive IRBY 10, 11, 12, 13 in 1566 in of Cayshoe, Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

REV. EDWARD BULKELEY

(Rev.) - EDWARD BULKELEY, D.D., second son of Thomas Bulkeley of Woore, Shropshire, by his wife Elizabeth, daughter of Randall Grosvenor, was born not far from 1540. He matriculated pensioner from St. John's  College, Cambridge, Michaelmas, 1555; Scholar, 1555;, B.A.,1559/6O M.A., 1563; B.D., 1569; DD. 1578; Fellow, 1560. He obtained the rectorship of Odell in Bedfordshire, probably in 1571. He "compounded" for the living at Odell, 6 Mar. 1571/2, as it is shown by the Bishops  Certificates of the Diocese of Canterbury.* This means that he then paid to his superior his first year's salary, as was then the established practice  in the English Church.
He married; probably about 1566, OLIVE IRBY,born say 1547, buried at Odell, 10 Mar. 1614/5, daughter of John and Rose (Overton) Irby, by whom he had three sons and twelve daughters.

It is very difficult to learn much of  the personal history of a minister who lived in the sixteenth century and who, by the very nature of his calling, did not figure in the political annals of his generation, He was Prebend of Chester, 1574; of Westminster, of Lichfield, 1594; and was Vicar of St. Mary, Shrewsbury,1578-82. We know that he was one of the commissioners appointed by the Bishop of Lincoln in 1608 for the "Levye of Armour" in Bedfordshire among the clergy.

We owe to the late Col. Banks the  following interesting item from Shrewsbury Corporation Record, Burgess Roll, 1580: Edward Bulkeley of Shrewsbury professor of theology,  son of Thomas, admitted burges and has issue Nathaniel, aged 6; Mary, aged 13; Frances, aged 12; Judith, aged 10; Martha, aged 8; Deborah, aged 5; Dorcas, aged 3; Elizabeth, aged 1.

Rev. Richard Madockes of Woodhall.[Odell], co. Bedford, in his will dated 15 Aug. 1606, proved 27 Nov. 16O6, after providing for his relatives in Shrewsbuy, gave legacies to Mr. Doctor Bulkley, Mistress Olive Bulkley, and their daughter Mistress Elizabeth Bulkley. and appointed Edward Bulkley, D.D., and pastor, sole executor. Dr. Bulkeley's daughter the "Mistress Elizabeth" referred to above, married Richard Whittingham, of Sutterton, co. Lincoln. He in his will, dated 6 Mar. 1615, proved 1 Apr. 1618, made provision for his wife Elizabèth, by whom he then had no children, and his own heirs; and then gave legacies to his "brother" Mellowes' children to William Ingoldsbie, a son of brother Ingoldsbie, clerk, and. the rest of sister Ingoldsbie's children, and to Olive Welbie and all the rest of her brothers and Sisters; also to his father-in-law, Mr. Doctor Buckley, his brother-in-law Mr. Peter Buckley, and the latter's son Edward; and made Mr. Anthony Ingoldsbie, of Fishtoft, clerk, one of the supervisors of the will.

Dr. Bulkley was a moderate Puritan; he resigned his pastorate in 1609, probably because of increasing age, and died at Odell early in Jan. 1620/1. His burial on 5 Jan. 1620/1 was entered in the Odell registers by his son Peter, who had succeeded him as Rector.

The will of Edward Bulkley late of "Woodhall" Bedford, doctor of theology, deceased, was proved Jan. 1620/1, and a commission to administer was granted to Peter Bulkley, son of the said deceased, and executor named in the will [westminster Act Book, No. 3, fo. 59] The will does not exist, either filled or in the register.

Olive IRBY [Parents] [scrapbook] 1, 2, 3, 4 was born 5 in 1547 in Odell, Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom. She died 6 on 10 Mar 1614/1615 in Odell, Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom. She was buried 7, 8 on 10 Mar 1614/1615 in Goldington, Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom. He was the oldest son of William Ward, an early settler of Sudbury, where he had lands granted him, 1640.  He m. Hannah, dr. of Edward Jackson, Sen., about 1650; she was born in London, 1631, bap. May 1, 1934.  He was a turner, and settled in the E. part of the village. His f. in law, Edward Jackson, Sen., conveyed "to him and his w. Hannah, all that tract of land where they have entered and builded their dwelling house, about forty-five acres."  Highway N., land of John Jackson E., highway to Goodman Hammond's s., and Capt. Thomas Jackson E., highway to Goodman Hammond's s., and Capt. Thomas Prentice W. Whitnesses, John Jackson and John Spring; this deed was not acknowledged until fourteen years after its date.  Upon this tract stood the venerable Garrison house, supposed to have been built by him; it was taken down in 1821, having stood about one hundred and seventy years, and sheltered seven generations.  He was chosen one of the first board of Selectmen, at the organization of the Town, Aug. 27, 1679, and continued to hold that office nine years.  He was their first Representative to the General Court, after the organization of the Town, and served eight years in that office, commencing in 1689, being the first year after Gov. Andros was deposed, and William and Mary proclaimed King and Queen.  The session lasted fifty-four days, and the Town voted him one shilling and sixpence per day, for his services.  By subsequent purchases of land, he increased his forty-five acres to about five hundred acres, which he distributed among his sons, by deed of gift, in 1701, seven years previous to his decease.   Source: "History of Newton Massachusetts" by Francis Jackson

Lieut. John Spring came to this country with his parents, in the ship Elizabeth., William Andrews, Master, in 1634, (then four years old,) with two brothers, Henry and William, and one sister, Mary.  Henry took the homestead at Wat. - John removed to Camb. Village, about the time of the ordination of its first Minister.  His bro. William went to Barbadoes, and d. there, leaving a s. John, who was here when his father William d. in Barbadoes, about 1695, then eighteen years old. On hearing of the death of his father, he chose his uncle John, of Cam. Village, his guardian; made his will, dated 1698, giving all his estate to Jonathan Green, carpenter, of the Village, and appointed him his executor, and sailed for Barbadoes, to obtain the portion of goods that had fallen to him, by the death of his father.  His will says that, he "gave his estate to Green, in token of his gratitude to him, for his kindness and care, in his straits and difficulties, &c., in which others, of whom he might have expected help, deserted him, &c., from which we may infer that Green loaned him money, - and he made him the executor of his will, as the only security he could give him, in case of his loss at sea.  He prob. did not return to this country.
