Nathan was one of the first white settlers of Chesterfield, New Hampshire when it was still Massachusetts Territory. He traveled by canoe up the Connecticut River. On Christmas day of 1764 Nathan began to build his homestead on the fertile east bank of the River at Chesterfield. In 1776 he signed the town's Declaration of Independence,and joined the Continental Army in the state of New York. After that tour he was one of the principal suppliers of lead for bullet making during and after the war.
