Ancestors of Tim Farr and Descendants of Stephen Farr Sr. of Concord, Massachusetts and Lidlington, Bedfordshire, England

Salmon FARR [Parents] [scrapbook] 1 was born 2, 3, 4 on 23 Nov 1757 in Acton, Middlesex, Massachusetts, United States. He died 5 on 13 Jan 1834 in Brandon, Rutland, Vermont, United States. He was buried on 13 Jan 1834 in Brandon, Rutland, Vermont, United States. Salmon married Lucy MATHEWS in 1803 in Brandon, Rutland, Vermont, United States.

Salmon resided 6 in 1790 in Leicester, Addison, Vermont, United States.

Other marriages:
SWINERTON, Mary

An article in the NEHGR volume 110, January 1956, pg.4 entitled "Miss Shirley Farr" by Arthur Adams states that Salmon was a son of Stephen Farr and Sarah Bennett but the vital records clearly show that Salmon was a son of Joseph and Dinah Farr. I find no record of a Salmon Farr being born on that same date to a Stephen and Sarah Farr.

People have confused Soloman son of Jonathan Farr and Lucy Fay and Salmon/Solomon son of Joseph Farr and Dinah Powers. Children of these families have also been combined. Soloman son of Jonathan was born 1764 and died in 1849. Salmon Farr son of Joseph was born in 1757 and died in 1834. Mary Swinerton was married to Salmon Farr 1779 son of Joseph Farr. Solomon Farr son of Jonathan was married to Mary Polly Swimerton about 1785.

Lucy MATHEWS was born 1 on 18 Aug 1775 in Princeton, Worcester, Massachusetts, United States. She died on 4 May 1858 in Leicester, Addison, Vermont, United States. Lucy married Salmon FARR 2 in 1803 in Brandon, Rutland, Vermont, United States.

Lucy resided 3 in 1850 in Leicester, Addison, Vermont, United States.

JOSEPH FARR II AND JOSEPH FARR III

This history of the Farr family would not be complete without a mention of the Joseph Farr who was a maker of mathematical instruments, for he does belong in this family.

In The Makers of Surveying Instruments in America Since 1700 by Charles E. Smart, a book that can be found in the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D. C., are found these paragraphs:

Joseph Farr was born in Cummington, Massachusetts, February 4, 1775. He died in Manlius Village, New York, on December 2, 1845.

His father, Joseph, Senior was the first innkeeper in Cummington in 1771, and died there on February 24, 1796.

Joseph Farr was a silversmith by trade and a manufacturer of mathematical instruments.

This information is somewhat inaccurate. Later research by the compiler of this book has proven that this Joseph Farr, maker of mathematical instruments was a grandson of the first Joseph Farr, not a son. His parents were Joseph Farr II, and Sarah or Susannah Farr. This would make him a first cousin twice removed from Julius E. Farr. The birth dates of the three Joseph Farrs are:

Joseph Farr I born 11 April 1718

Joseph Farr II born 30 August 1743

Joseph Farr III born 2 February 1775

Communication with the Smithsonian Institute has provided the following information as to where the instruments made by this remarkable man may be found:

One Compass is privately owned in Syracuse, New York. It is 16” overall, with a 5 and 3/4 needle. It is numbered 82, and engraved “J. Farr, Manlius Village, N. Y.”
