BCRNEWS
DOVER — The Eckhoff and Schaeffer clans held their annual family reunion Aug. 8 at the Dover Church Meeting Hall. Members caught up on the latest family news, met the newest babies and took group photos.
Care was taken to determine the oldest person attending, Caroline (Eckhoff) Hooker, 94, and the youngest, Caraline Keller, 3. Traveling the farthest was Raye Linda Farr, Washington, D.C.
This reunion has now been held for 84 straight years. Locations has varied, including the Princeton area, Buda and Dover. The first reunion took place in 1927 at the farm of Lorenz Eckhoff outside of Buda. Alta (Eckhoff) Blakely, 91, and Phil (Laddy) Eckhoff, 86, have the reputation for having made all of the reunions.
This year’s theme was “Let’s Line Up Our Ducks In a Row!” Stanley Farr (Alta’s son) has been raffling off a duck decoy, the work of his own hands, at each reunion for almost 20 years. This year many of the past winners brought in their birds to display. The 2011 duck, the “American River Mallard Hen,” went to Cara Keller. Since Cara and Roger Keller just celebrated their golden wedding anniversary that duck is now designated the “50th Anniversary Duck”.
Additionally, at the 2009 reunion, Stanley introduced two “traveling ducks” to be held each year by the presiding reunion president and the presiding secretary-treasurer. Mark Keller ended up with the presidential duck as the 2009-10 president and Kriste Ericsson got the secretary-treasurer duck that year (a Bufflehead drake). Both were voted to keep them for 2010-11.
Other years the theme of the reunion frequently includes tracing family trees, displaying handmade quilts in the church sanctuary, and, when reunion numbers were large enough, the traditional softball game. Now activities run towards “Swedish Golf” and “Paint the Kid’s faces”. Those who arrive early in the weekend always gravitate towards Dover’s town park to enjoy its playground (not much changed there!), the food and exhibits, and the talent show at the band shell during “Dover Day” (always a fun experience). Time is spent renewing old acquaintances, attending Sunday church (sometimes held in the park), discussing the weather, life and the height of the corn, and exploring old haunts (including the cemeteries!)

They had the following children.

  F i Cara Marie FARR.
  F ii Raye Linda FARR.
  M iii Thomas Stanley FARR.
