Dear Newsgroup ~

Although the secondary sources have muddled the early history of the
Freville family, the line of descent is actually quite clear if one
studies the descent of lands.

The head of this family, Baldwin de Freville (died 1257) married (1st)
Lucy de Scalers, by whom he had one son, Richard (died 1299), of Caxton
and Shelford, Cambridgeshire, Munden-Freville, Hertfordshire.
Following Lucy's death, he married (2nd) Maud Giffard, daughter of Hugh
Giffard, of Boyton, Wiltshire, by Sibyl, daughter and co-heiress of
Walter de Cormeilles, of Weston-under-Edge, Taddington, etc., co.
Gloucester. Baldwin (died 1257) had two sons by his 2nd marriage to
Maud Giffard, namely Sir Baldwin (who died without issue in 1289), and
Sir Alexander (died 1328), of Tamworth. Maud Giffard married (2nd)
William Devereux, Knt., of Holme Lacy, Herefordshire, who was slain at
the Battle of Evesham 4 August 1265. They had further issue. In 1286
Godfrey Giffard, Bishop of Worcester, granted Maud Devereux and Sibyl,
her daughter, an acre of land in the field of Wyston, which after their
deaths should go to the prioress and nuns of Wyston. Maud died 20
August 1297.

That Sir Alexander de Freville was the son of Maud Giffard is proven by
two records. First, I find that Alexander had a grant of land in
Marden, Herefordshire from his uncle, Godfrey Giffard, Bishop of
Winchester. Second, Sir Alexander was heir through his mother to a
one-sixth share of the barony of Tarrington, Herefordshire, which lands
were Giffard estates.

I find that Sir Alexander de Freville (died 1328) and his wife, Joan
Cromwell, had issue one son, Sir Baldwin de Freville (died 1343), of
Tamworth, and two daughters, Margaret (wife of Sir Henry de Wilington)
and Elizabeth (wife of Eustace de Whitney).

Best always, Douglas Richardson, Salt Lake City, Utah

William De FERRERS 7th Earl of Derby [Parents] [scrapbook] 1 was born 2 about 1193 in Derbyshire, England, United Kingdom. He died 3 on 24 Mar 1254 in Evington, Leicestershire, England, United Kingdom. He was buried in Merevale, Warwickshire, England, United Kingdom. Most authorities name this William the 5th Earl of Derby not taking into account that his grandfather William de Ferrers was a Templar and was not allowed to bear a coat of arms. He was the 5th Earl of Derby and his father, Robert de Ferrers, was stripped of his coat of arms because of his rebellion and was 4th Earl of Derby. These two Ferrers' show no armorials and are skipped by many authorities but not by all. Cecil Stewart Filmer Ferrers(among others) in his book, "The Ferrers Family History" shows all eight Earl Ferrers' of Derby instead of the usual six.

The Chartley line is through William's oldest son, Robert 8th Earl of Derby. The Groby line is through his second son, William 1st Baron of Groby.

Margaret De QUINCY [Parents] was born 1 about 1218. She died 2, 3 about 12 Mar 1281. Margaret married 4 William De FERRERS 7th Earl of Derby 5 in 1238.

They had the following children.

  M i
Robert De FERRERS 8th Earl of Derby was born 1 in 1239. He died 2 before 27 Apr 1279.

William De FERRERS 6th Earl of Derby [Parents] [scrapbook] 1 was born 2 in 1172 in Tutbury, Staffordshire, England, United Kingdom. He died 3 on 22 Sep 1247 in Duffield, Derbyshire, England, United Kingdom. William married Agnes De KEVELIOC also known as Meschines 4.

William's death is erroneously said to have died in Chartley Castle, of the gout-- in fact his gout-related death was due to injury, as recounted in an anecdote in Burke's: "His lordship, who from his youth had been a martyr to the gout, and in consequence obliged to he drawn from place to place in a chariot, lost his life by being thrown through the heedlessness of his driver over the bridge at St. Neots, co. Huntingdon." He died in an inn enroute to Chartley, and Agnes his wife of 55 years died upon the arrival of his body-- so he was not conveyed to Merevale Abbey (as has been reported), and the two of them were given a joint funeral and burial at Chartley.

Agnes De KEVELIOC also known as Meschines [Parents] 1 was born 2 about 1174. She died 3 on 2 Nov 1247. Agnes married William De FERRERS 6th Earl of Derby 4.

Agnes de Kevelioc, alias Agnes of Chester, was Lady Chartley in her own right, and conveyed that honor into the Ferrers family as he dowery. She and the Earl were married for over 50 years, died within days of one another, and were given a joint requiem on their burial together.

The Ferrers family kept Chartley for generations even though William held it in tail for the duration of his wife's life-- it has been said the portentous nature of their double burial there had some influence on the King's conveyance of Chartley to William's son the 5th Earl.

They had the following children.

M i William De FERRERS 7th Earl of Derby was born about 1193. He died on 24 Mar 1254.
