MORTON, Ill. — Gayle Beatrice Farr Kirby, 101, a resident of Apostolic Christian Restmor, Morton, IL, formerly of Spencer, IN, passed away July 26, 2010, at 7 a.m. at Restmor.

Gayle was born January 20, 1909, in Morgan County to Roscoe Farr and Grace (Wampler) Farr. She was married to Robert W. Kirby on May 3, 1930. Robert (Bob) preceded her in death on October 31, 1995. She is also preceded in death by her parents, Roscoe and Grace Farr, and her brother, Uriah (Jerry) Farr, and an infant son, Richard (twin to Edward) in 1941.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Edward and Patricia (McFarren) Kirby, of Groveland, IL; and daughter, Peggy McCrary, of Bloomington, IN. Also, two grandsons, Clifton (Elaine) Kirby of Edwards, IL, and Robert (Darcie) Kirby of Nonthaburi, Thailand. There are five great-grandchildren, Logan, Jada, Charles, Katherine, and Helen.

Gayle was an Indiana University alumna, having earned her Teaching Certificate, Bachelor's Degree and, at the age of sixty, her Master's Degree. Gayle taught elementary school in one-room schoolhouses in Monroe County for seven years. After moving to a farm near Gosport in Owen County, she taught at Quincy School for three years and sixteen years at Spencer Elementary School, retiring in 1971.

She was a member of Indiana and Spencer Retired Teachers Associations and Carp Extension Homemakers. Gayle was a member of Bethany Presbyterian Church while residing in Owen County and was an associate member of the First United Methodist Church while residing in Peoria, IL.

In association with the Owen County Soil Conservation District, Gayle and her late husband, Robert, hosted annual county-wide 5th grade farm tours beginning in 1965 and continued for approximately 20 years.

Services will be 10 a.m. EDT Saturday, July 31st, at West & Parrish & Pedigo Funeral Home in Spencer, IN. Visitation will be Friday 4-7 p.m. EDT and one hour prior to the service. Reverend Jeff Chudy will officiate. There will be a Memorial service at Apostolic Christian Restmor in Morton, IL, September 8 at 3 p.m.
