Charles Henry Farr was born at Westmoreland, New Hampshire, on May 18, 1834. He grew up in a Christian home and united with the Congregational church at the age of sixteen. Coming west in 1865, he located in Kansas City, Missouri. Here he found his life companion in 1865. He was married to Miss Mary Jackson, of Kansas City, in the same year. This union was blessed with three children two daughters and one son, who have gone ahead of him to eternity. The family resided in Kansas City until 1867, when they moved to Holton, Jackson county, Kansas. They lived on a farm for eight years and then changed their home to the city of Holton. Mr. Farr had in the meantime joined the Baptist church. He became one of the charter members of the Baptist church of Holton …. He leaves his faithful life companion to mourn the loss of him. He is the last of his father’s family, as death had removed his only brother several years ago …. He passed away July 29, 1916, at his home in Holton, Kansas, after a period of failing health for five years. He attained the age of 82 years, 2 months and 13 days …. laid to rest in the Holton cemetery …. Mr. Farr was a member of the Union army, therefore a member of the G. A. R. Post of Holton. He was also a member of the following orders: Knights of Pythias, Odd Fellows and United Workman ….

Mr. and Mrs. Charles Farr, settled in Liberty township in 1866. Mrs. Farr came by train to Netawaka when she was 17 years old, carrying a two months old baby in one arm and a cage with a bird in the other. First year lived with her sister, Mrs. Foote and her husband on the McAllister farm where Mr. Farmer now lives. Went back to Kansas City MO for the first winter where Mrs Farr was born and raised. Talks about Kansas City history. Her maiden name was Jackson, and the street and park in Kansas City bear that name in honor of her father.

Spring of 1867 they returned and built a cabin near where Harlan Wright's home stands. Bitter winter of 1868, lost their infant son. Buried their baby in their yard. Neighbor, Charles Snyder, conducted the funeral; later the casket was moved to the Holton cemetery.

In 1870 they built the home where Pete Wright lives. Farr had a fine apple orchard which he planted and Mrs Farr hauled sod in a wheel barrow to sod the yard. Ten acres was broken; paid $1.25 per acre.

In 1874 they moved to Holton; lost two daughters to scarlet fever in same week. After Mr. Farr died, Mrs. Farr lived in Holton for 53 years; attends Baptist church. Remembers neighbors: Porterfields and Littles.

Albert Herman Farr Sr.

Albert Herman Farr Sr., 82, of Altadena, Calif., formerly of Grafton, died Thursday at is home after a short illness.

He was born in Pittsfield and worked for the Sunshine Biscuit Co., Grafton, retiring in 1972, after 18 years. Mr. Farr moved to Canoga Park, Calif., in 1973, and moved to Altadena in October 1985.

Mr. Farr is survived by his wife of 61 years, Isabella T.; children, William Farr of Fremont, Ohio, Albert Farr Jr. of Gainesville, Tex.; Ernest Farr of San Diego, David Farr of Chatsworth, Calif., Catherine Fridley of Altadena, Calif., Patricia Brink of Gainesville, Tex.; 36 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; five great-great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Ann Zahniser.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Calvary Cemetery, Los Angeles.

Cabot & Sons Mortuary, Pasadena, Calif., is in charge of arrangements.

AUGUSTINE W. FARR, Representative from Manistee county in 1877, was born in Essex county, N. Y., July 29, 1847. He removed with his parents to Grand Rapids in 1854, went to Ohio in 1859, and returned to Michigan in 1864. He received an academical education. In January, 1867, he went to New York city, and was cashier for a banking house for about two years. He returned to Michigan and engaged in lumbering, which, together with farming, he now conducts at Portage Lake, Manistee county. Has been president of the Manistee county agricultural society, and held many minor offices. In politics a Republican.
