Had two daughters.

As a youth, he attended Westmorland schools, performed chores around the family farm, and worked summers at “the big hotel” at Lake Stafford. Prior to the 1910 Leslie left home and took room and board in the Keene area, working as a salesman in a clothing store, probably Brown’s Haberdashery in Keene, NH (1910 census, Leslie age 19 listed as a salesman in a clothing store). Around 1914 he moved to Greenfield and worked in Rosen’s clothing store. He later moved to Shea Brother’s clothing store, which became Shea & Farr when he bought a half interest, and then L.E. Farr in 1922 when he bought out the Shea’s interests completely.

Leslie was a slight man probably no more then 130 pounds- and susceptible to illness. He had suffered from the very dangerous flu epidemic during the world war one, after he moved to Greenfield, and almost died, had his landlady not nursed him back to health. Around 1933 he contracted tuberculosis from a young man who worked in his store. Leslie spent many years fighting the disease, as well as Scarlet Fever contracted in 1946, and had to take in a series of partners to help manage the store. Dave Bartlett was Leslie’s first partner (Farr & Bartlett) and Art Willard (Farr & Willard) became the second. Art bought the store after Leslie died in 1948. Art maintained the store in the Mansion House until fire destroyed the building in the 1950’s. Both Leslie and Genevieve are buried in Middlebury, VT.

Genevieve, the daughter of John and Isabelle Halnon of Cornwall, VT, was trained as a school teacher and started her teaching career in Middlebury. However, Greenfield offered $100 more per year in teacher’s salary, enticing her to move. Following marriage she left teaching, as married women were not allowed to teach. The Farr’s rented an apartment on the first floor of a large three family house at 42 Congress Street, conveniently located within walking distance to the clothing store, which was located in the Mansion House on the corner of Main and Federal Street. Leslie and Genevieve’s family grew with the addition of Margaret Mary in 1922 and Genevieve Grace in 1924. The family purchased a home at 254 High Street in 1933 and Genevieve lived there until her death in 1958. The home was furnished with many antiques and hand crafted pieces made by Eugene Farr. Leslie’s sister, Florence, didn’t like old things and Genevieve did, to the benefit of the Farr household and descendants. Along with the antiques, there were always fresh baked cookies and pies in the pantry.
