This branch of the ancient Arnold family of New England, England and Wales, traces, according to a pedigree recorded in the College of Arms, to Ynir, King of Gwentland, who reigned in Wales about the middle of the twelfth century.  Ynir was the second son of Cadwalader, King of the Britons, and from this source sprang Roger Arnold of the twelfth generation, the first to adopt the surname Arnold.  From Roger in direct descent came Thomas and William Arnold, who came to New England, and were the progenitors of the distinguished Arnold family of Rhode Island.

William SIMONDS was born about 1611 in England. He died 1 on 7 Jun 1672 in Woburn, Middlesex, Massachusetts Bay Colony, British Colonial America. William married 2, 3, 4 Judith PHIPPEN on 18 Mar 1643 in Woburn, Middlesex, Massachusetts Bay Colony, British Colonial America.

BIO FROM WIKITREE:
William Simonds was probably born in 1611 based on his stated age as a witness in court in four Middlesex County, Massachusetts court cases. On 28 December 1658, "William Simons aged about 47 yers" testified in the slander case between Edward Johnson plaintiff vs. John Carter defendant; On 29 December 1658, "William Simons aged about 47: years" testified in a case concerning the laying out of a highway between Concord and Woburn; on 15 April 1659, "William Simons aged 47 years or there abouts" testified in a case brought against Ralph Reed of Woburn for threatening to shoot someone; on 2 April 1662, "William Simons aged about 50" testified in a case between William Johnson plaintiff vs. the town of Woburn defendant concerning some land that William Johnson had purchased from Rebecca Trarice. Based on William's stated ages in these court cases, it is likely that he was born sometime between April and December 1611.

Judith PHIPPEN 1 was christened 2 on 25 Sep 1617 in Burnett, Somerset, England. She died 3 on 3 Jan 1689 in Woburn, Middlesex, Massachusetts Bay Colony, British Colonial America. Judith married 4, 5, 6 William SIMONDS on 18 Mar 1643 in Woburn, Middlesex, Massachusetts Bay Colony, British Colonial America.

HAYWARD, James

They had the following children.

F i Sarah SIMONDS was born on 28 Jul 1644. She died on 19 Sep 1692.
F ii Judith SIMONDS was born on 3 Mar 1646. She died on 10 Apr 1704.

James HAYWARD 1 was born 2 about 1613 in Stepney, Middlesex, England, United Kingdom. He died 3, 4, 5 on 20 Nov 1642 in Woburn, Middlesex, Massachusetts, United States. James married 6, 7 Judith PHIPPEN in BY 1642 in Woburn, Middlesex, Massachusetts Bay Colony, British Colonial America.

James emigrated 8 on 22 Mar 1634/1635 from London, Middlesex, England, United Kingdom.

ORIGIN: Stepney, Middlesex.
MIGRATION: 1635 on the Planter (on 22 March 1634/5, "James Haieward," aged 22, servant, with a certificate of conformity from Stepney parish, was enrolled at London as a passenger for New England on the Planter [Hotten 43]).
FIRST RESIDENCE: Charlestown.
REMOVES: Woburn.

OCCUPATION: Tailor [ChTR 23].
ESTATE: On 3 January 1636/7, "James Hayward a tailor was admitted & to have such a houseplot as the town can afford & other accommodation where it is to be had" [ChTR 23]. On 30 April 1638, he was granted a haylot at Wilson's Point [ChTR 38].

BIRTH: About 1613 (aged 22 on 22 March 1634/5 [Hotten 43]).
DEATH: Woburn 20 November 1642 [WoVR 2:89].
MARRIAGE: By 1642 JUDITH PHIPPEN. She married (2) Woburn 18 January 1643/4 WILLIAM SIMONS [WoVR 3:127].
CHILD:
i  REBECCA HAYWARD, b. Woburn 4 December 1642 [WoVR 1:117]; no further record.

COMMENTS: In the 1635 passenger list, James Hayward is entered as one of four servants, apparently of NICHOLAS DAVIS  [GM 2:2:304-9]. This association allows us to build a consistent story for James Hayward. Arriving as a servant, he would probably not appear immediately in the records. The grant of land by the town of Charlestown in early 1637 is appropriate for a young man just being released from servitude, and in this case the servitude would appear to be apprenticeship as a tailor, which was the occupation of Nicholas Davis. Another of the servants of Nicholas Davis was JUDITH PHIPPEN , and the reasonable assumption has been that she was the woman who became the wife of James Hayward.

On 29 March 1642, "James Hayward of Salem" appeared twice in Ipswich Court as a plaintiff [EQC 1:41]. Pope has assumed that these two records pertain to the subject of this sketch [Pope 223], but we have no other reason to suppose that the man of Charlestown and Woburn also resided at Salem.

Pope correctly included the passenger list information under his entry for James Hayward, but inexplicably also gave the same information in the following entry for John Hayward of Concord.

Judith PHIPPEN 1 was christened 2 on 25 Sep 1617 in Burnett, Somerset, England. She died 3 on 3 Jan 1689 in Woburn, Middlesex, Massachusetts Bay Colony, British Colonial America. Judith married 4, 5 James HAYWARD in BY 1642 in Woburn, Middlesex, Massachusetts Bay Colony, British Colonial America.
