My grandmother, Helen Saley, shared with our family that it was believed that her mother(Elizabeth Banks Smith) would not survive after the birth of Samuel Lesley Saley, therefore, baby Samuel was placed with the intent that the Farr family would take care of him until her father was able to again provide all that would be needed to take care of his large family.  It was never their intent to allow anyone to adopt their children.

As Samuel, being an infant, had no recollection of his parents or siblings and the Farr's  wanting him as their own son, and being the only source of information about his real parents and siblings, the Farrs told him negative stories about his birth parents and siblings so that he would not want to have anything to do with them.

Great grandpa and great grandma (William Edward Saley and Elizabeth Banks Smith) had legal right to Samuel but the Farr's did all in their power to deter their obtaining him.  When the Farrs were finally required to give him to his birth family (about 6 years), Samuel believed the Saleys to be terrible people and did not want anything to do with them. He was miserable and hated being with the Saleys.  After a short while, his parents decided it was in his best interest emotionally to stay with the Farr Family. The Farrs named him Gardner Farr.
