The following is from "The Family of Willis Vernon Farr" by Jayne E. Bickford:

Both Mattie and Donald graduated from the University of
Vermont. Mattie taught home economics before her marriage.
Donald was in the insurance business. As I recall it,
he was the youngest Insurance Commissioner the State of
Vermont ever had appointed.

An account of the wedding of Mattie and Donald follows:

“Miss Mattie Watkins Farr, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Willis V. Farr of 83 North Union Street, became the bride of Donald Arthur Hemenway of 204 Pearl Street, Burlington, son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur C. Hemenway of Sheldon, in a picturesque home ceremony, Saturday afternoon, at 2:30 o'clock, performed at the residence of the bride's parents. The officiating clegyman was the Rev. Harvey Connor.

"The bride was lovely in a gown of bridal satin and chantilly lace, fashioned in semi-princess line. Her bouquet was of pale pink and white roses, showered with sweet peas.

“Miss Alma M. Farr, a sister of the bride, attended her as maid of honor. Her gown was of pink dotted net and satin and she carried a bouquet of shaded pink and pale blue chrysanthemums.

“The bridegroom had Professor L. Douglas Meredith of Burlington as his best man. Preceding the bridal party came two little nieces of the bride, the Misses Jeanne Lois Farr and Dorothy Brown, as flower girls strewing blossoms in her path.

“Before the ceremony, Mendelssohn's Wedding March and at the close of the service, the Wedding March from 'Lohengrin' were played by F. J. Preston.

“The house was attractively decorated with evergreen, pink chrysanthemums and roses for the occasion, forming a charming background for the ceremony.

“Immediately following the ceremony, a reception was held at the bride's home. Light refreshments were served, pink and green being the predominating color motif in the decorations of the dining room and the refreshments. A chicken-pie supper was served in the evening.

“The bride was the recipient of a large number of useful and ornamental gifts, as well as a substantial sum of money. Her gift to her maid of honor was a turquoise ring, and she presented the flower girls with sterling necklaces. The bridegroom's gift to the best man was a pearl tuxedo set.

“Mr. and Mrs. Hemenway will make their future home at 193 Howard street, Burlington. The bride, until her marriage, has held a position as a teacher in the Stratford High school at Stratford, Conn. Mr. Hemenway is a representative of the Maryland Casualty company for Vermont.

There followed in the newspaper article a long list of out- of-town guests. As I recall it there were over a hundred persons present at this wedding. The guest list showed Mattie's brother John and his wife and daughter to be from Germantown, Pennsylvania, at that time.

I recall that I passed out wedding cake (fruit cake) to the guests, Each piece of cake was wrapped in white tissue and tied with white ribbon. I also received a sterling necklace from my Aunt Mattie.
